Urokinase (Urokinase)
Overview of Urokinase
Urokinase is a human enzyme synthesized by the kidney and excreted in urine. Urokinase is similar in action to streptokinase, used intravenously to break down and dissolve blood clots. Urokinase is used in the treatment of pulmonary embolism.
Indication of Urokinase
Urokinase is primarily indicated in conditions like Arterial thrombosis, Hyphaema, Myocardial infarction, Pulmonary embolism, Thrombosis.
Contraindication of Urokinase
Urokinase is contraindicated in conditions like Hypertension,Peptic ulcer,Cardiac stroke,Renal diseases,Liver diseases,Trauma,Bleeding diathesis,Internal haemorrhage.
Side Effects of Urokinase
Urokinase produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Cerebral hemorrhage, Bleeding. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Urokinase therapy.,The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Urokinase are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Blood oozing from venopuncture sites.
Precautions of Urokinase
Before starting therapy with urokinase determine hematocrits, platelets counts, thrombin time, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen levels.
