Polythiazide is a thiazide diuretic used orally in the treatment of oedema and hypertension.
Indication of Polythiazide
Polythiazide is primarily indicated in conditions like Diabetes insipidus, Edema, Heart failure, Hypercalciuria, Hypertension, Oedema.
Contraindication of Polythiazide
Polythiazide is contraindicated in conditions like Diabetes mellitus,Hypokalaemia.
Side Effects of Polythiazide
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Polythiazide, which give rise to further complications include Atherosclerosis.,Polythiazide produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Polythiazide therapy.,The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Polythiazide include Hypotension, Volume depletion, Hypokalemia, Renal failure, Hyponatremia.,The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Polythiazide are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Gout, Impotence.
Precautions of Polythiazide
Thiazide diuretics increase sensitivity to sunlight, avoid prolonged sun exposure, use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing. It should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed. It should be used with caution in patients with medical history especially if have gout or diabetes, or any allergy especially to sulfa medications. Avoid any drug that increase heart rate or cause excitation like decongestants (found in cough and cold products) because it may counter-act blood pressure medicine.
