Overview of Barium Sulphate

Barium Sulphate is used in roentgenography (radoigraphy) to make the intestinal tract opaque for X-ray examination. Barium Sulphate is also used for roentgen ray examination of colon and stomach.

Indication of Barium Sulphate

Barium Sulphate is primarily indicated in conditions like Delineation of GI in ctexamination, Esophagus imaging, Ileostomy enema, Small bowel imaging, Stomach imaging.

Contraindication of Barium Sulphate

Barium Sulphate is contraindicated in conditions like Tracheo-oesophageal fistula,Suspected intestinal perforation,Small bowel obstruction.

Side Effects of Barium Sulphate

The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Barium Sulphate, which give rise to further complications include Bacteremia.,The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Barium Sulphate are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Diarrhea, Constipation, Appendicitis.

Precautions of Barium Sulphate

Barium sulfate should not be given to patients with intestinal obstruction and care is needed in those with condition which may predisposed to obstruction. Adequate hydration should be ensured to avoid constipation. Avoid in patients with gastrointestinal perforation, and should be avoided, particularly when given rectally. Aspiration may lead to Pneumonitis.
