Citric Acid makes the urine less acidic. Citric Acidused to dissolve urinary bladder calculi , used in the treatment of certain kidney disorders and gout and as a mild astringent.
Indication of Citric Acid
Citric Acid is primarily indicated in conditions like Urinary alkalinization.
Contraindication of Citric Acid
Citric Acid is contraindicated in conditions like Addison's disease,Oliguria,Renal impairment.
Side Effects of Citric Acid
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Citric Acid are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Local irritation, Erosion of teeth.
Precautions of Citric Acid
Dilute with water to minimize gastrointestinal (GI) injury associated with oral ingestion. Take after meals to avoid saline laxative effect. Citric acid should be given with caution to patients with low urine output and abnormal renal function because it develops hyperkalemia or alkalosis, use with caution in patients of cardiac failure, hypertension, peripheral or pulmonary edema.
