Carbenoxolone (Na) is a synthetic derivative of glycyrrhizic acid, an agent extracted from licorice, having marked anti-infammatory actions and aldosterone like activity. It has been shown to be effective in healing both gastric and duodenal ulcers.
Indication of Carbenoxolone Na
Carbenoxolone Na is primarily indicated in conditions like Aphthous mouth ulceration, Benign gastric ulcer, Duodenal ulcer, Peptic oesophagitis.
Contraindication of Carbenoxolone Na
Carbenoxolone (Na) is contraindicated in conditions like Hypertension,Cardiac failure,Hypokalaemia,Renal diseases,Hepatic disease.
Side Effects of Carbenoxolone Na
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Carbenoxolone (Na), which give rise to further complications include Hypokalemia, Fluid retension, Increased blood pressure.,Carbenoxolone (Na) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Hypokalemia, Hypertension, Cardiac failure, Papilloedema. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Carbenoxolone (Na) therapy.,The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Carbenoxolone (Na) include Hypokalemia.,The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Carbenoxolone (Na) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Weight gain, Increased weight.
Precautions of Carbenoxolone Na
Avoid carbenoxolone in patients with hypokalaemia, in elderly patients, in children. It should be used with caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension or impaired kidney or liver function. Avoid use during pregnancy.
